Politics And Facebook

So the election campaigns are going on. I know this from the sudden construction of roads, groups of people wearing vetis popping up all over the town, the drunk Vijaykanth video etc etc. I have never followed politics or know the politicians name except for Mr.Karunanidhi and Ms.Jayalalitha of course.

Most of the election campaigning ideas seem to be based on making a list of stuff they will give for free. But one thing that is puzzling me is, why there is no serious campaigning going on in Facebook. You can argue that only a small portion of people would be affected by this, but still every vote counts.

Now I searched in Facebook to see if Mr.Karunanidhi and Ms.Jayalalitha had profiles in FB :D I found only this for Mr.Karunanithi and these two for Ms.Jayalalitha (no idea if they are authentic :) ). Admittedly the latter has better profiles. But not a great deal of activity on the profiles.

Now there are a lot of ways you can use a profile in Facebook. Consider if Ms.Jayalalitha had posted "If the DMK government promises to give 24 hr electricity for the next term, why not give it right now?"*, imagine the no of people "liking" it or re sharing it. Imagine the effect it would have on the people like me who don't really have a lot of idea on who they should vote for. Especially on the ones who have stopped watching TV and look to Facebook for day to day news.

* - As quoted by Vishnu

They could have even followed the Cricket World Cup and wished Team India all success from their profiles. That would have a mighty positive effect on the people online! And if you see "Ms.Jayalalitha is attending the Support Anna Hazare meeting" on your Facebook wall, you would be impressed.

And the whole thing is not gonna take a lot of time. The parties can even hire a few people from colleges and get the Facebook campaigning going on. An internship for a err "real-time application" like this looks swell on your resume :D

P.S : There is a possibilty that online campaigning is going on a large scale and I am simple unaware of it :D

P.P.S : I hope one day I will see on my FB wall "Opposition Party |> Ruling Party : Pls amend the bill according to the mail we sent you, if you need us to agree on it" :)

God Is Great ;)

So there I was sitting in the open auditorium looking at the cultural show. Just as I was beginning to get bored, it happened.

Someone crossed me and sat two rows in front of me. My God, was she beautiful. The easy smile, the flowing hair, the breath-taking beauty. I had never seen a more beautiful woman. It was like I was in a dream. I sat there, totally blanked out. She was easily the most beautiful woman I have seen in my.. Wait.

A group dance from the B Arch girls just started. And there she was. Right in the middle of the group. One look at her could just fill any man with a thousand smiles. The slight touch of laziness in her dance was magical. I had never seen a more beautiful woman. I knew I could look at such beauty all day along and still.. Wait.

Thoughts about the girl of my dreams popped into my mind. To say she was stunning would be such an understatement. I mean, she was easily the most beautiful woman I had seen in real life. I had always wondered how an angel would look like. After seeing her, I knew. It had to be.. Wait.

And the list keeps growing. There is only one possible explanation for all this beauty in this world.

God is great.

Who Am I?

I have always wondered who am I.
I am Mario trying to save my Princess.
I am Wayne Rooney trying to shoot past the keeper in Be-A-Pro.
I am the manager of Valencia taking them to an undefeated season in FIFA.
I am Tony Hawks trying to do an ollie and get it into a manual.
I am Hitman trying to get rid of the targets assigned to me.
I am the Emperor of Russia trying to build a mighty army.
I am a programmer.
I am an engineer studying 5 straight hours from e-books.
In short,
I am someone who loves the virtual world.

Think about it. The virtual world almost - almost - gives you everything you want.
I get out of head aches by playing FIFA.
I learn history by playing Age Of Empires.
I learn not to make silly mistakes by playing Warrior Within.
I learnt to accept defeat when there was no other way.
And ya, it helps me get out this college life which sometimes can just get darn boring. The list can go on.

Do not mistake me. I like the real world too. But this just about nearly sums up everything I think.

Call me unrealistic. Call me simplistic. Call me whatever you want. But I believe given a few touches, the virtual world can almost - again only almost - replace my real world.

Give me a PS3, friends to join in FIFA and I can stay awake late nights (late nights as in 3am to 5am) having a lot of fun :)

Iyyo Iyyo

This is a conversation my dad overheard in the bus when he came from Chennai to Madurai to visit me. It was during the err 'Alagar going around the city festival' when a group of people spray water on who ever they can.

...
Guy X : Ya, I am new to the city.
Guy Y : This is a big festival sir. You know me and my parents have lived many years in Chennai. But the crowd here is so much more than in Chennai ( The "crowded" place was looking like a half empty Ranganathan street!).
Guy X : Oh, I didn't know Madurai was such a big place.
Guy Y : It is sir. After the next turn is the Kamarajar Salai. It is the Madurai equivalent of Mount Road (Whaaaaaaaat???). Its as long as Mount Road. Maybe longer(Omg!). There is also new complex coming in that road like that Spencer Plaza...

(Unfortuntately my dad had to get down on the Kamarajar Salai stop where my house is. Pity we missed the rest of the conversation)
Pride on hometown is ok dude. But this kinda "reel vudrathu" is just too much!

How Long Can I Go

Well having seen my share of novels and movies in my life, I have, for a very long time wondered just how long a sentence I can write in English without commiting any possible grammatical and semantic mistakes as known to me and hence I have decided to give this a try now here in this blog by stringing together as many clauses as I possibly can (for this sentence is a Complex sentence and not a simple or compound sentence) along with few other adjectives that immediately jump into my mind, which I must say is actually in a relaxed and happy state for I just noticed India win the ODI against Sri Lanka quite comfortably, and I hope that you read this, keeping in mind the fact that if I had used certain swear words like f... this sentence could have been much longer and appreciate this attempt of a fellow human who has tried this only because he is very bored thanks to the fact that he does not have much else to do. :)

P.S : Suggestions on elongating this sentence are most welcome. ;)

The Reality Of New Year

As a new year is about to dawn on us and a portion of city is on the streets in the name of "party", I sit here in the tranquility of my house along with my family feeling a mixture of amusement and confusion at this uncanny behavior shown towards the concept of New Year for I cannot quite fathom what a change in the third column of date can quite possibly bring.

Yes I understand what New Year means. Scientifically, it denotes the completion of the Earth's rotation around the Sun (neglecting of course the 1/4th extra distance); teenagically another chance to have great fun with friends; parentically it denotes a sudden increase in the expenditure column and the hopes of better fortune come the new year; grandparentically it means calls from their children; commercially, time to cash in.

Though every New Year is welcomed with a bang, all the party and merriment ends as quickly as it "bang" and finally ceases into a quiet, calm day - just like any other. Come Jan 2nd, we all return to the everyday routine - the same commute, the same job, the same everything. Two consecutive days, two totally different ways of living it. How human.

Of course that's only one view of seeing things. And every coin has two sides to it right?

Every one makes mistakes. It is only human to do so. And we need a fresh start more than once to properly sort things out. New Year is one way of mentally giving ourselves that "fresh start". For doesn't New Year indicate the wonderful beginning of another set of 365 days with a clean slate? It fills people with hope, joy and above all a sense of togetherness.

Jan 1st is the day when we both look back on the past while contemplating the future, all being done in the present. It gives us that all important chance of analyzing what we have done, what we are doing and what we are going to do.

As the fire crackers begin to fly, channels showing people jumping around i come to the end of this year now. And I as I want this to be the last thing I do, I have only one more thing to say.
Cheers, ppl.

THE Duel

Ever since my childhood i have wondered about God and science and the conflicts between them. This poem is based on this ever debated topic.

"Only God can save you", said my heart,
My brain to that replied "that's rubbish";
Between these two voices was I caught,
For I did not know which was gibberish.

My heart said that God really existed,
A proof my brain immediately demanded;
"Look around you, the things He has created!"
"Evolution and time are the true creator".

"If God did exist, tell me why,
Why are there thieves and killers?
And why so many innocent die
When God is indeed a true lover?"

"It is a test that we all must take,
For only to live is our duty and
Leave the rest to Him for our sake
As He created this life and this sand"

Thus raged the battle within me forever,
And I knew not which one to trust,
For both were filled with power;
I will know only when I go to dust.

The Dying Man

This is something i wrote some time back when i had left my mind to
wander...

The stars on the sky he was counting,
Lying on the river bed of a river red;
In his heart he knew he was dying,
As a bright darkness engulfed his eyes.

He had often wondered what death brings,
Now for the moment of truthness come,
Waited he with broken heart, dead brain
Saw scenes,vaguely familiar were some.

As doom approached,a voice spoke in him
"Chasing ever a dream i lived my life,
Found it not for i knew it not, that
Life is folly, life is full of sorrows"

"I was born unknown, now die unknown
Just like a worm, though I in the end
Was brought down by treachery,like many;
Betrayal-the gift for all acts by me"

His heart was delirious, his mind clear
"We live everyday only to die one day,
One day we die for others to live everyday
Thus goes on the endless circle of life"

"We try to answer questions before we die,
And find the answers only after we die"
Thus realizing,he forgave and forgot all
With truth realized,he smiled...

The Potter - Frodo Face-Off

Harry Potter the wizard. Frodo the ring bearer. What if the characters from Potter and LOTR (books that i greatly admire) face each other in a duel for honour? First we discuss about the teams.

The Potter Team :-
*Dumbeldore - The Greatest Wizard Of Our Time (Captain)
*Harry Potter - The Boy Who Lives
*Voldemort - The Dark Lord
*Ronald Weasley - Trusted Friend
*Severus Snape - The Real TeamMan

The Tolkien Team :-
*Gandalf (Captain) - The White Wizard
*Frodo Baggins - The Ring Bearer
*Sauron - The Maia
*Samwise Gamgee - Gardener At Bag End
*Aragorn - Heir Of Isiuldur

Round 1 :- Samwise Gamgee vs Ronald Weasley

Sam has no weapon but is brave. Ron has the wand but is a bit shaky. Sam looks at the curious object at Ron's hands. Ron seizes the moment. "Obliviate". Wand broken. Ron forgets everything. Sam now jumps on Ron an strangles him. Ron does not resist. Sam shows pity and stops the fight. Suddenly Sam freezes and falls down. A beaming Hermoine waves at Ron from the crowd.
One - Nill to The Potter's

Round 2 :- Harry Potter vs Frodo Baggins

Harry is ready as ever. Frodo is fiddling with his pocket.Harry considers what spell to use when suddenly Frodo disappears(He uses the One Ring to do this). Harry starts shooting spells randomly. Frodo sneaks slowly towards him. Out of sheer luck one of the spells hits Frodo square on the chest and he immediately freezes. Harry removes the Ring.
Two - Nil to The Potter's

Round 3:-Snape vs Aragorn

Sensing that Frodo is in danger Aragorn jumps onto the stage. Snape immediately appears to protect Harry. Snape looks straight into Aragorn s eyes. A little child running. A tall man with a beautiful women. A man standing crest fallen before the statue of Isildur. Aragorn rises from the dream. He summons the Army Of The Dead. Snape s spells are useless against them. Aragorn with one swift stroke breaks Snape s wand into two.
Two - One to The Potter's

Round 4:-Sauron vs Voldemort

Two great Dark Lords. Feared by all. Sauron with his ring believes he is invincible. Voldemort knows he is immortal with all his Horcruxes. Just as the battle is about to start the Nine Nazguls appear. Voldemort is hit with an epiphany. He knows the horcruxes are gone. Sauron, with the One Ring and his mace advances. Voldemort desperately uses defensive spells. Sauron uses ancient magic to summon the Balrog. Voldemort is clueless. One slash from the fire-sword of Balrog and game over.
Two all now.

Round 5:-Dumbeldore vs Gandalf

Dumbeldore looks at Gandaly the Grey. Before anyone can even move Dumbeldore draws his wand and shoots a spell at Gandalf. Gandalf falls. Everyone is stunned to realize the battle is over. Just as the Potter s were to be declared as the winner Gandalf the White appears. Gandalf says "Now I come, at the turn of the tide". An intense battle between Dumbeldore and Gandalf ensues. As both men become weary they realise the amount of damage done by them. This was not what they both desired. Both stop fighting. They look into each other's eyes.

As they say the rest is history.
